British Values

British Values

Ways that we promote BV at Wishing Well Preschool-  Nursery

Rule of Law

Promote the understanding that we have to follow rules & that they are there for a reason.
•    The setting has a routine and boundaries in place, we also follow some golden rules that we agreed with the children.
•    Behaviour Management Policy & some specific strategies in place.
•    Consequences delivered if rules are being consistently broken, having a brief ‘thinking time’.
•    Children’s feelings & emotions are discussed throughout the day.

Democracy

Giving children choices and showing them that their views and opinions are valued and taken into account.
•    Shared decision making takes place throughout the day, e.g. children are given the choice if they want to go outside or stay in, choosing a book to read at a small story time.
•    The role play area is discussed with the children with visuals of how the role play area could look, children are encouraged to look at and discuss their choices, and we follow their interests in continuous provision.
•    Children are consulted with any changes made to the room and staff look at what the children engage with

Individual Liberty

Creating high self-esteem and self-worth in children.
•    Positive reinforcement with behaviour, children are given lots of praise.
•    Children can join in with practitioners when writing observations and updating learning journeys.
•    Children can see their own pictures on display giving them a sense of pride and accomplishment.
•    Children can have an opinion on many things in nursery such as activities and room changes.

Mutual Respect & Tolerance

To treat others as you would wish to be treated.
•    Each child has an opinion and opportunity to express themselves, visuals are used for those that do not yet use speech to communicate.
•    The nursery is inclusive of all cultures/religions/age/gender & abilities.
•    Children’s perception is challenged e.g. pink is for girls, at dinner time different colour cups are given to children.
•    Multi-cultural clothes are accessed in roleplay area, books in reading corner have different ethnicities in them.
•    Occasions are celebrated in different religions e.g. Diwali, Chinese New Year & the children are given these learning opportunities.
